A Luxury Escape to Sir Bani Yas Island: Wildlife, Conservation, and Indulgence
Sir Bani Yas Island has been on my bucket list since we moved to the UAE. Initially, I hesitated due to the cost, questioning the value compared to other destinations. However, my perspective shifted dramatically after our visit. The experience? Simply breathtaking.
Our two-night stay felt too short; a week would be ultimate relaxation. The hospitality at the main hotel set a high standard, complete with shoulder massages upon check-in—a delightful surprise. Our bartender, Deepu, enlightened us about the origins of Anantara/Minor Hotels, a story previously unknown to me. Fascinatingly, it was founded by a 17-year-old, aptly reflecting its name, "Minor."
Our safari with Khalid, the following morning, was informative. He shared insights into the local fauna, flora, and the island’s conservation efforts. A highlight was learning about the Arabian Oryx, the UAE’s national animal, which had been on the brink of extinction (only three remaining in the world). Thanks to conservation efforts, the island now hosts a thriving population, with more than 100 living on the island, and 500 that were released into the wild in Saudi Arabia.
Equally impressive was the environmental transformation of the island, from barren, with nothing other than a small date grove planted by the Bani Yas tribe, to a lush oasis, with over three million trees planted by hand.
The following day we transitioned to a villa in Al Sahel that offered luxury beyond compare. The proximity to wildlife, combined with the villa's amenities (my favorite, the private plunge pool), made for an unparalleled relaxation experience. The peacocks and gazelles roaming free became familiar sights, and capturing their beauty became a captivating endeavor.
Dining at Boma offered an exceptional buffet experience, from its ambiance to its diverse and high-quality offerings, thanks to Francis and his team.
The staff's dedication made our stay memorable, and while I cannot name everyone, Camille, Jerees, and George stood out for their exceptional service.
If Sir Bani Yas Island has been on your wish list, my advice is to go! It’s an experience I hope to repeat.
